That's why Sans plays smarter, not stronger. Anyone who finally scratches away at the hardened, dusty levels of apathy and depression that cover Sans might find themselves on the receiving end of A Bad Time.
However, it takes a lot to get past Sans overwhelming sense of... not caring. He only cares about Papyrus at this point, having witnessed reset after reset, dealing with the countless hundreds of deaths of his brother and everyone around him. He just Doesn't Care anymore, and can barely bring himself to care about anything. In neutral mode, after the death of Papyrus and the crumbling of the Underground, he dryly and hopelessly mentions that 'this is what happens' when people like him don't care.
However, through most of the game, in pacifist route, Sans is a funny, poor joke machine, full of random humor and helpful advice, even if he might not be the most helpful character. He definitely won't step in if you get murdered, and according to him, he's done a 'great job' of ensuring you don't die, considering he doesn't have the best memory about resets, and as far as he's concerned the player hasn't died once. He's known as a lazy comedian who mostly goofs off at his sentry stations, drinking ketchup and taking a lot of naps.
It's slowly sussed out that he's a deeply intelligent character, having built a time machine in his room, with the ability to teleport and move at incredible speeds. He wants to save the underground, but after constantly being thrown back to the beginning by the power of resets, he can't even bring himself to care about escaping anymore. As far as he is concerned, there's barely any point to it anymore. He can't go back and revive W.D Gaster, he can't save his brother, he can't bring everyone out of the underground, and the only way he can stop Chara is to harry and slow them down until they quit coming back out of pure frustration.
Sans is the weakest character in the game.
But he's also by far the most intelligent.
Which makes him the most frightening boss there is.
